Zechariah 4:1-6 (NIV)

Then the angel who talked with me returned and woke me up, like someone awakened from sleep. 2 He asked me, “What do you see?” I answered, “I see a solid gold lampstand with a bowl at the top and seven lamps on it, with seven channels to the lamps. 3 Also there are two olive trees by it, one on the right of the bowl and the other on its left.” 4 I asked the angel who talked with me, “What are these, my lord?”

5 He answered, “Do you not know what these are?” “No, my lord,” I replied. 6 So he said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty.

Acts 1:4-8 (NIV)

4 On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command:“Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. 5 For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” 6 Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

God uses a symbolic image in Zech 4:1-6 to speak of Israel’s role to be light in the darkness. Jesus also used symbolism when He said as believers we are to be “salt” and “light” in the world. What do you think He meant by “salt” and “light”? What does this practically look like in your life right now?

“Trying to follow the way of the Lord without receiving the power of the Lord is exhausting”. Do you agree? What difference does the Holy Spirit make in your life when it comes to following after Jesus?

Pastor Mike spoke about listening to and follow after God’s voice. In what ways does God speak to us? How do we grow in both learning to hear and obey His voice?

Practical Application

“Culture says seek happiness, Jesus says seek holiness. Culture says indulge yourself, Jesus says deny yourself. Culture says consume, Jesus says give. Culture says demand your rights, Jesus says lay down your rights and help others”.

“If you are a Christian professional in a non-Christian office, you are light in the darkness. If you are a Christian student in a non-Christian school, you are light in the darkness. If you are a Christian neighbor in a non-Christian neighborhood, you are light in the darkness. This is our purpose/calling! You are light, now shine!”

Where has God put you in terms of your neighborhood, work place, or school? Ask the Lord afresh this week to open your eyes to what He is doing in these areas and how you can get in step with His ministry there. Invite the Holy Spirit to fill you and equip you to follow God’s purposes and plans where ever you go.

One of the dangers we can fall into as Christians is the belief that following Jesus is simply a matter of trying to be a better person. We end up leaning on our own strength to achieve this, slowly realizing our willpower alone falls short in helping us live like Christ. Thankfully, God has not only called us to a higher way of living but also equipped us for it. Join Pastor Mike and Will as they explore what it means to live by the Holy Spirit.
